On December 17th 2014 the worldsteel’s 9th Regional steelChallenge Competition took place, online for a 24-hour period. The initiative brought together 1,566 teams and 1,922 participants from 34 countries.

Two young men from Argentina’s Universidad Nacional del Sur, who represented the “Américas” region, are among the winners of the category “Students”. The World Championship will take place in Brussels in February 2015.

Worldsteel’s regional steelChallenge invited the participants to create steel at the lowest total cost and required quality for a construction application, using the basic oxygen steelmaking method, in a simulation on steeluniversity.org. The program revealed 83,000 attempts, which is 73% more than in 2013. 811 teams successfully completed at least one run of the simulation and 10,500 successful runs were completed. All regional winners received certificates, cash prizes, an iPad, and a trip to Brussels, fully paid by worldsteel to participate in the global instance.

At the final instance in Brussels, Argentine Emiliano Buhlman and Thomas Aagaard, from the Universidad Nacional del Sur, will compete for the title of World Champion under the “Students” category. The event will feature leaders of the global steel industry. The World Champions in both categories, “Industry” and “Students”, will be awarded a World Champion certificate, an additional cash prize and the steelChallenge trophy. Total prizes for steelChallenge-9 are €43,000.
