The future is already here at Ternium

The automotive industry demands increasingly sophisticated products for the future of mobility.

We respond to a demand focused on developing more energy-efficient electric vehicles and reducing the impact of transportation on the environment.

Our commitment to sustainability drives us to invest in new technologies and continuously improve our steelmaking system. Additionally, we strive to minimize the impact of our operations, reduce our carbon footprint, and maximize resource efficiency.

Our sustainability journey

Sustainability is an integral part of our philosophy and identity. We are committed to decarbonizing our steel manufacturing processes and have outlined a path to achieve this:

  • ▸ In February 2021, we implemented a global strategy to address climate change.
  • ▸ Our plan? To reduce our CO2 emissions rate in steel manufacturing by 20% by 2030. This is only possible through significant commitment, investments, and actions involving the entire steelmaking value chain.

We design a path to achieve our goals and maintain our active role in caring for the planet. This plan is reviewed quarterly to preserve the set course.

  • Increased use of renewable sources in our energy mix.
  • Increased use of scrap in the metal mix.
  • Expansion of the CO2 capture capacity in the Direct Reduction process.
  • Continuation of Ternium's energy efficiency program.
  • Prioritization of low-emission steel manufacturing technologies.
  • Collaboration with raw material suppliers to reduce emissions in processes.
  • Investing in sustainability and innovation

"We are excited to embark on a new phase of development with the Pesquería Industrial Center project as the backbone, representing the convergence of our vision for the future of the industry. The new DRI-EAF steel-making mill will be equipped with the latest technologies to accelerate Ternium's commitment to decarbonize its operations."

How does the automotive sector impact the environment?

To reduce the environmental impact of mobility, solutions are needed to accompany the reduction of the carbon footprint in transportation systems.

Steel is a strategic material to achieve this goal. Our innovation in product design and engineering is essential to creating lighter, stronger, and more durable steel.

HIGH STRENGTH AND LIGHTWEIGHT

Our new advanced high-strength steels can reduce a vehicle's weight by 25% to 39%. In a family car, this represents a saving of up to 3 tons of greenhouse gases over the vehicle's lifespan, equivalent to recycling almost 130 million plastic bags.

INVESTMENT IN SUSTAINABILITY

Some of the research areas in which we work and invest are focused on producing advanced high-strength steels to enhance vehicle safety and reduce CO2 emissions.

We are part of WorldAutoSteel

We are members of WorldAutoSteel, a select group of companies dedicated to producing high-quality steel for the automotive industry. Within this consortium, we conduct market studies and engineering analyses to demonstrate why steel stands out as the optimal material for the future of mobility.

Collaboration and innovation in the industry drive the creation of increasingly specialized steels that are key for the vehicles of the future: electric, connected and autonomous.
