A Year of Sustainable Achievements for Ternium

Share

The latest edition of Ternium’s Sustainability Report highlights the company’s main environmental, social, and economic initiatives in 2024. It also outlines the governance structures and mechanisms that guide the company’s operations.

“Steel is much more than a material—it’s the driving force of progress in our societies. Our vision is to produce steel in a responsible, innovative, and sustainable way, acting as a key driver of economic and social development in Latin America,” says Máximo Vedoya in the report.

Updated Decarbonization Roadmap

In 2024, Ternium revised its 2030 target to reduce emission intensity by 15%, now including Scope 3 emissions (categories 1 and 10) in addition to Scopes 1 and 2, using 2023 as the new baseline. This update covers emissions from raw material production through the hot rolling process.

To achieve it, the strategy includes prioritizing low-emission steelmaking technologies, increasing the share of renewable electricity in the energy mix, expanding CO₂ capture and utilization capacity, advancing energy efficiency initiatives, and increasing scrap content in the metallic charge.

The Construction of the Most Modern and Sustainable Steel Mill in the Americas Continues

At the Ternium Industrial Center in Pesquería, Nuevo León, construction continues on the new steel mill, scheduled to begin operations in 2026. With an annual production capacity of 2.6 million tons, the mill is designed to meet the most demanding industry requirements while maintaining the lowest CO₂ emissions per ton in the market for such products. It will also be equipped to transition from natural gas to green hydrogen once it becomes economically viable—looking ahead to post-2030 alternatives.

Vientos de Olavarría Wind Farm Begins Operations

Located in Argentina, this is Ternium’s first wind farm built and operated entirely by the company. With an investment of $225 million, it features 22 turbines that now replace 90% of the company’s electricity supply from the national grid with renewable energy. It also significantly reduces our carbon footprint, helping prevent approximately 111,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Environmental Commitment in Action

In 2024, Ternium invested $120 million in environmental projects, from emission monitoring technologies to protecting the flora and fauna in and around our sites and communities where we operate.

For example, in Brazil, new particulate monitors were installed at all three community-adjacent air quality monitoring stations. In Argentina, the secondary fume extraction system at the steel mill was upgraded, including new dust collectors and transport systems to improve capture efficiency.

In Mexico, Ternium signed an agreement with the Autonomous University of Nuevo León to restore 576 acres of fire-damaged land at the “Bosque Escuela” —offering a new green lung for the state of Nuevo León.

Third Roberto Rocca Technical School Opens

In Santa Cruz, Brazil, the third Roberto Rocca Technical School began operations, joining the network alongside the schools in Pesquería, Mexico and Campana, Argentina (operated by Tenaris). The school welcomed its first class in February and has capacity for 576 students, offering specialized training in Mechatronics and Electromechanics.
