Together, we make a significant contribution in Latin America

Share

“We believe our industrial project will only be sustainable with the support of our communities,” emphasized Máximo Vedoya in the 2023 Sustainability Report, which reviewed the work done throughout the year to move forward in Ternium’s strategy.

The actions highlighted included monitoring the decarbonization plan, which involved reviewing the goals set in the previous edition to drive long-term positive impact. Additionally, emphasis was placed on the value of community development in the areas where the company operates, as well as the importance of a strong safety culture in all aspects of the business.

On the route to decarbonization

Moving towards a more sustainable steel production with a lower environmental impact, the company highlights the modification of the decarbonization targets that were established in 2021. Scope 3 emissions are now included for raw materials and even the hot rolling process, using the GHG methodology.

As part of this decarbonization program, investments in the wind farm in Olavarría, Argentina, were increased, with the objective of covering 90% of the annual requirements of electricity purchased from third parties in the country's operations by the end of 2024. Other initiatives include improving carbon capture and utilization capacity, as well as increasing the use of scrap metal, with the aim of reducing emissions intensity by 15% by 2030.

Improving our safety performance

“Ensuring a safe and healthy working environment is always our priority,” mentioned Paolo Rocca. In 2023, the main focus was on preventive actions and a rigorous training plan. By the end of the same year, the number of employees working in ISO 45001-certified facilities increased to 93%.

That same year, the company began implementing new technologies, such as virtual reality, to enhance the effectiveness of training programs. This initiative was recognized with the Steelie Award for Excellence in Education and Training in Ternium Brazil. Additionally, the Task Rejection tool was reinforced, and ongoing initiatives like Ternium Safety Day and the Safe Supplier program continued.

Developing the community's potential

On the topics of diversity and community impact, the progress of programs and actions taken to ensure an inclusive work environment, as well as community support, were presented.“Ternium’s achievements over the years have been driven by the talent of our people,” emphasized Vedoya.

At the beginning of 2024, the Open Doors program was resumed in Mexico, and the Maternity Mentoring program aligned with the United Nations’ Women's Empowerment Principles was continued. In terms of diversity, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina received certification from the Human Rights Campaign, which recognizes Ternium as one of the best places to work for theLGBTQ+ community.

In 2023, Ternium witnessed a 19% increase in female employees under the age of 30 compared to the previous year. In addition, regarding multiculturalism, today there are 27 different nationalities working in the company.

In the Sustainability Report 2023 you can find more information about the values, activities and governance of the issues that are an integral part of Ternium's long-term sustainability.
