Mexico´s steel is where it is needed

Nachig, Chiapas, is a community in Chiapas´ Highlands, where the primary spoken language is Tzotzil. In this little town, a story comes alive.

Marcos Antonio Pérez Durán, known as Toño by his friends, is a young working man at a flower greenhouse —the main economic activity of the zone—. He is not yet of legal age but has a near-coming goal: to be able to change the roof of his house´s kitchen and install new grooved galvanized sheets because the current ones are way too battered.

He wants to rush into it; he knows September comes with an intense rainy season, day and night. His family has suffered it every past season, and Antonio is not willing for it to happen again.

Every morning he walks from his home to the town´s greenhouses to take care, crop, and prepare flower shipments on their way to national and international markets. The region´s greenhouses are built with Ternium´s Greenhouse Pipes.

Mexico´s hundreds of “Toños”

Antonio´s story is no different than that of millions of Mexican families. Approximately 12% of the houses in the country have sheet metal roofs. This percentage is substantially increasing in rural regions of the country, as it happens in Chiapas´ Highlands.

To be able to get to the inhabitants of these communities and attend to their needs, it is quite important to rely on a solid distribution network, like the one Ternium has created over the years and currently reaches municipalities such as San Cristóbal de las Casas, Zinacantán, Chamula, Oxchuc, Ocosingo, Altamirano, Chilón, Yajalón, Tila, Teopisca, Comitán de Domínguez and Las Margaritas.

Also, for nearly 30 years, Ternium has worked for hand in hand with its distributors and authorities to ship the materials needed, mainly grooved galvanized sheets for roofing.

Ternium´s Fair

La Feria, set during November at the Main Square and with information offered both in Spanish and Tzotzil, attracted the community. More than 2,700 people, children, and adults spent the afternoon playing and participating in group dynamics. Not only there was fun and games, but they also learned —in their native language— fundamental aspects for construction, maintenance for materials and other advantages these products have for daily living.

More industries supplied by Ternium

During La Feria Ternium in Nachig, Antonio took the chance to see everything he wished to buy soon because he had another goal in mind: to improve the conditions of his house, made from blocks and timber.

The community of Nachig is not the only one where these events are organized. Many towns and near vicinities have had the chance to get to know Ternium´s products such as galvanized sheets and Ternium´s galvanized greenhouse pipes, used to shape greenhouses with more durable and sturdy materials.

There is always something to be improved

Toño´s work came to fruition, and he was able to purchase the materials. With the help of his friend Eduardo, he took down the old sheets where the sun would get into on dry days. The water would do the same on rainy days, substituted them with the new Ternium´s Zintro Alum sheets, and nailed them down to the wooden structure holding his home down, just as he learned at La Feria Ternium.

Ternium´s Zintro Alum sheets are distinguished by their excellent quality and resistance to corrosion. Besides, they have been protecting the homes of Mexican families for over 30 years.

Antonio´s mother was thrilled. “It looks so good!” she said. She thanked him and sighed in relief, while she hugged her son because she had nothing to be worried about coming rain season. This one and many more stories are possible due to the closeness Ternium keeps with its communities.
