Ternium recognized by its commitment to sustainable development

Share

Maximo Vedoya, CEO at Ternium, received the worldsteel acknowledgment for his work on sustainability in the company during 2019.

The company is among the organizations with the best work in sustainability subjects during 2019, according to worldsteel.

Ternium was recognized for showing its commitment to sustainable development during 2019. This year is the second in a row that the company achieves the Sustainability Champions award, given by the WorldSteel Association (worldsteel), an organization that groups all major steel producers in the world.

Maximo Vedoya, Ternium’s CEO, expressed in Twitter, his pride for receiving this award. “We know at Ternium that steel is indispensable for a sustainable future and that the environment is a primordial value,” he wrote in the social network.

To be acknowledged, steel companies must comply with various steps. The first one is to commit by signing worldsteel’s Sustainable Development Letter. It must also measure and offer data for the six sustainability indicators in the organization, like material efficiency, environmental management systems, rate of frequency of injuries that incur in lost days, employee’s training, investment in new processes and products, and a distributed economic value. Besides, it must offer data from the Cycle of Life.

Additionally, companies must publish a report related to sustainability. They must have been preselected in one of the five WorldSteel Steelie Awards or recognized in the Health and Safety Acknowledged Programs.

In 2019, the technical school Escuela Tecnica Roberto Rocca, an education project from Ternium in the Pesqueria community, in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, won the Steelie Award to Excellence in Education and Training. Sustainability data from the company is published in the annual report, and the most recent one can be viewed here.

This year nine companies won the award. Usually, champions receive certificates in the WorldSteel General Meeting, but due to the COVID-19 measures, the prizes were sent to companies and representatives in their countries of origin.
