The Future of The Automotive Industry

Steel E-Motive is a program that designs and tests engineering solutions using advanced steels for the automotive industry.

Ternium promoted Monterrey’s Institute of Technology in the styling contest of the WorldAutoSteel’s Steel E-Motive program, being the only university in Latin America to participate.

Steel E-Motive from WorldAutoSteel, launched an international styling contest directed mainly to designing schools around the world that are promoted by companies that belong to this program, which Ternium is part of.

“The company chose the Architecture, Arts, and Design School from Monterrey’s Institute of Technology to participate in this contest”, said Juan Pablo Pedraza, Research Manager of the company.

“It is not an open contest, Steel E-Motive made a pre-selection between the schools, in which Ternium presented Monterrey’s Institute of Technology as a candidate. In the end, it was the only school from Latin America selected to compete against some of the best design schools from all over the world,” he said.

The contest consists of designing a vehicle seen from the outside. Moreover, it is possible to present more than one project. “Ternium’s team is supporting the students with lectures on the use of the steel, why it is an important part for the automotive industry, and its future in that field.”

Some of the participating schools are London’s Design School, Polytechnic University of Milan, California’s Design School, and Tokyo’s Automotive School.

“The company decided to promote Monterrey’s Institute of Technology due to its constant communication and relationship with it, its constant innovation in the educational field, and the school’s mission and vision that are similar to Ternium’s”, Valeria Toraño, Head of Acquisition and Talent, explained.

Also, this experience will help the students in their professional development.

“This is a project that impacts the positioning of our brand and the constant innovation that we promote in benefit of industry development for the future leaders of the company”, said José Pérez, Analyst of Acquisition and Talent.

Around 55 students from fourth, fifth, and seventh semester that currently take the subjects of Advanced Digital Modeling and Prospective Design, will participate in this contest.

“We are considering the future’s needs for creating an idea and a concept. Then, we will make that idea into digital so we can make the 3D model, after that, we will make the renders to show them in the contest,” Luis Amaya, Monterrey Institute professor, explained.

In this project, Neil McGregor, project leader from the Global Engineering and Environmental Consulting Firm Ricardo, exposed to the contestants the concepts of the design that will be used for this type of vehicle; while George Coates, Technical Director of WorldAutoSteel, offered a lecture about advanced steels and transformation processes.

Steel E-Motive relies on the participation of the Global Engineering and Environmental Consulting Firm Ricardo, which is in charge of the design and the integrated engineering of the vehicle.

Steel E-Motive is a program that designs and tests engineering solutions using advanced steels in order to adapt to the latest tendencies in the automotive field, with the main goal of showing that this material is fundamental for the future of the industry.

The world’s leading companies, alongside Ternium, participated in this program launched on November 2020, and several automotive companies are part of the advisory board. This group is in charge of designing a concept for a vehicle made with advanced steels.

Steel E-Motive relies on the participation of the Global Engineering and Environmental Consulting Firm Ricardo, which is in charge of the design and the integrated engineering of the vehicle.
