Monterrey: Commuting to the Plant by Bike

Share

Arturo Contreras, Forklift Operator at the Guerrero Plant, uses his bicycle to get to work.

Arturo Contreras, forklift operator at the Guerrero Plant, takes some time every day to check and prepare his bicycle and personal protective equipment before pedalling to work.

Since 2002, Arturo uses his bicycle as a means of transport to get to his shift at the Guerrero Plant. Doing some exercise and caring for the environment by leaving his car at home is his motivation.

"I wanted to do some exercise during my free time, but sometimes I spend that time with my family. That's why I decided to use that commuting time to get to the plant to do exercise instead", said Arturo, who travels over four kilometers a day to go to work and other four to get back home.

Arturo emphasized that using the bicycle is a good option to avoid the bus and getting in contact with people, due to the recent situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just like Arturo, the bicycle is also the main means of transport for Izac Grimaldo, forklift operator at the Guerrero Plant.

Izac Grimaldo, forklift operator at the Guerrero Plant, has experience using the bicycle as a means of transport.

"I started using the bicycle four years ago as a hobby, but then I noticed all the benefits that this brings and, up to now, I keep using it as a means of transport to get to work", said Izac.

"Here at the Guerrero Plant, we have designated areas to park our bicycles in different parts of the plant".

Izac stated that his health has improved by using the bicycle, and he is proud of doing his bit to care for the environment by not putting another car on the streets of Nuevo León.

"With the current situation of the pandemic, this also contributes to the lack of crowds. There are a lot of benefits", said Izac, who travels over 26 kilometers a day to arrive to the plant and get back home.

In the light of all these benefits, both Arturo and Izac encourage their colleagues to use this means of transport. However, they recommend using the personal protective equipment at all times as safety comes first.

"Before I start my route, I think about my security. I put on my helmet, check the lights, and verify that the bicycle is in good condition", mentioned Izac.

The Government of San Nicolás de los Garza implemented a strategy to integrate specific lanes for cyclists throughout the entire city, aiming to reinforce a more inclusive road culture.

"We need to change our perspective towards the cyclist and be more respectful to improve our road culture and to make Nuevo León a better place to live", said Izac.

Ternium encourages the use of different means of transport, such as the bicycle, to promote good health and environmental care.
