The Vientos de Olavarría Wind Farm in Argentina represents a $225 million investment and will reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 111,000 tons per year.
The wind farm is fully operational since March 2025.
On Monday, October 13, worldsteel awarded Ternium the Steelie Award in the Excellence in Sustainability category for its project “Winds of Change: Ternium’s First Step into Renewable Energy in Argentina,” marking Ternium’s first large-scale renewable energy project. The event—held this year in Washington, DC and organized by worldsteel—recognizes members for their contributions to the steel industry in various categories.
As context, Ternium has been recognized for seven consecutive years by worldsteel as a Sustainability Champion, one of the companies committed to sustainable development. This recognition is due to significant investment in environmental projects, water and air care, and decarbonization.
Uğur Dalbeler, Chair of worldsteel, presenting the Steelie Award to Máximo Vedoya, CEO of Ternium, during the ceremony held in Washington, DC.
José Fonrouge, Global Sustainability Senior Director, emphasized: “This recognition reaffirms our company’s commitment to energy transition and decarbonization, through sustainable, concrete, and competitive initiatives such as our first Wind Farm at Ternium.”
The project was developed entirely by Ternium’s internal engineering teams and demonstrates the company’s adaptability and strategic vision towards decarbonization.
The impact of the Vientos de Olavarría Wind Farm in 5 key points:
1. It will enable the replacement of nearly 90% of the electricity the company currently sources from the grid in Argentina: It will generate approximately 480 GWh per year, equivalent to the average energy consumption of at least 100,000 households per year.
2. The wind turbines contain 85% recyclable components.
3. A $225 million investment: With 22 wind turbines and a total installed capacity of 99 megawatts, the wind farm has been fully operational since March 2025.
4. A project that grows with the community: At its peak, construction generated over 350 skilled jobs, fostering technical training and cross-sector collaboration. It also promoted awareness of renewable energy and environmental stewardship within the community.
5. It will reduce CO₂ emissions by around 111,000 tons per year: This is equivalent to removing 24,000 internal combustion vehicles from circulation annually.
This project will reduce CO2 emissions by around 111,000 tons per year.
In this edition of the Steelie Awards, Ternium was also nominated as a finalist in two other categories: Excellence in Communication Programmes, with the documentary “Tomorrow, Santa Cruz”, and Excellence in People, for its initiatives to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategies at all levels of the organization. Tenaris, another company belonging to the Techint Group, received two nominations in the Excellence in Communication Programmes category for its Safety campaign and the 70th anniversary of the Tenaris Siderca industrial center in Argentina.
This project adds to Ternium’s actions focused on producing the most sustainable steel in Latin America:
- Ternium has eight certified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), allowing the consideration of environmental aspects in the development of finished products.
- Ternium Industrial Center in Nuevo León, Mexico—one of the most modern in the world—is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
- At this center, Ternium is currently building a new steel mill, which will be one of the most modern and low-CO₂ emission mills in the Americas. It will also be adaptable to hydrogen-based reduction when economically viable.
- In Brazil, the scrap yard expansion project continues, which will allow increased use of scrap as raw material in the process, promoting circular economy and reducing CO₂ emissions.
The Steelie Awards have been presented since 2013 to projects that contribute to the positioning of the steel industry. Learn more about Ternium’s decarbonization projects in our Sustainability Report.
